A milestone for land reform
On March 17, 2025, Tanzania officially launched its revised National Land Policy, marking a significant step forward in people-centred land governance. Spearheaded by the National Land Coalition (NLC) and coordinated by Tanzania Land Alliance (TALA), this achievement reflects nearly a decade of inclusive advocacy, with support from Landesa and Hakiardhi.
To ensure the policy leads to real change, NLC Tanzania held a high-impact Analysis Workshop, identifying key areas for reform and submitting concrete recommendations to the government, including:
- Constitutional recognition of land rights as fundamental rights
- Protection of village autonomy from compulsory land allocations
- Promotion of community-led investment through joint ventures
- Legalization of community-managed grazing lands
- Strengthened oversight of land tenure decisions
- An annual review mechanism for land sector performance
This milestone sets a new benchmark for inclusive land reform in Africa.
