Accelerating the Adoption of the ILC Africa Gender Justice Charter
About the Gender Justice Charter Award
The International Land Coalition (ILC) is a global alliance committed to people-centered land governance by empowering the women, men, and communities who live on and from the land. ILC Africa, the coalition’s largest regional platform, works through member-led, multi-stakeholder platforms to protect land defenders and tackle key issues such as climate change, gender inequality, food insecurity, and land conflict.
To advance these goals, ILC Africa introduced the Gender Justice Charter—a framework developed in 2014, revised in 2019, and updated in 2021 to align with ILC’s 2022–2030 Strategy, where gender justice is a cross-cutting commitment. The Charter acknowledges the structural and cultural barriers to gender equality and calls for dismantling discriminatory norms and laws, while also recognizing the African Union’s role in promoting gender justice through instruments like the 2003 Maputo Protocol and the 2004 Solemn Declaration.
