RECONCILE’s restoration leadership ahead of UNCCD COP17 and the IYRP (2026)
As the world prepares for UNCCD COP17, where restoration will be a central theme, the importance of safeguarding rangelands and the livelihoods they support cannot be overstated. Rangelands cover vast landscapes and are home to millions of pastoralists whose mobility sustains ecosystems, communities, and economies.
We are proud to highlight the work of our member, RECONCILE (Resource Conflict Institute), whose leadership in advancing the recognition of pastoralists’ tenure and mobility rights is at the heart of sustainable rangeland restoration. Their efforts demonstrate how organized, seasonal mobility rooted in traditional knowledge restores degraded lands, protects biodiversity, and enhances resilience.
This Policy Brief on the Legal Recognition of Pastoralists’ Tenure and Mobility Rights calls on governments to:
- Guarantee pastoralists’ access to land and water resources.
- Protect mobility as a fundamental right for sustainable pastoralism.
- Expand legal frameworks to safeguard customary land rights.
- Recognize pastoralism as a legitimate form of land development.
- Involve pastoralist communities in decision-making processes at all levels.
