A milestone for people-centred climate action
10 July 2025, Lomé - Under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment and Forest Resources, Togo’s National Land Coalition (NLC) convened a high-level multi-stakeholder workshop to validate a new Report and Guide aimed at mainstreaming land rights in the country’s revised Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0).
The event brought together representatives from government, local communities, elected leaders, development partners, and research institutions. The documents validated were the product of an inclusive consultation process that incorporated contributions from civil society, community groups, and public institutions, building on lessons from Togo’s NDC 2.0.
With technical and financial support from the International Land Coalition (ILC) through the Global Land Catalyst funding facility, the Report and Guide underscore the foundational role of land rights in enabling effective climate action. They provide concrete proposals for ensuring that NDC 3.0 addresses land governance as a key enabler of resilience and sustainability.
This collaborative effort, between the Ministry of Environment, NLC Togo, ILC, and the Regional Coordination Centre of the UNFCCC, highlights a people-centred approach to climate policy and reinforces the importance of cross-sectoral synergy.
Key issues discussed during the workshop included:
- The link between secure land tenure and sustainable natural resource management
- Community contributions to climate commitments
- Mechanisms for monitoring land tenure in alignment with climate goals
- Institutional coordination for the effective implementation of NDC 3.0
Participants unanimously endorsed the Report and Guide as critical reference documents for updating Togo’s NDC. They expressed optimism that the tools will ground climate action in the realities of communities and the rights of land users.
