ILC Africa has announced the theme and details for the 2020 Africa Land Forum, to be held 15-17 September online. The Forum’s theme will be Delivering on the African Union Agenda 2063 by Promoting People-Centered Land Governance in Africa.
In partnership with the African Union Commission (AUC) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the Forum will bring together 300-500 participants from around the continent and beyond. It aims to give concrete appraisal to “AU’s Declaration on Land Issues and Challenges” at the regional and national levels, assist governments and international institutions in tracking progress towards land governance and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and facilitate discussions on land and livelihood in the time of COVID-19.
“Land is a key production factor, and we cannot expect sustainable development without secure tenure of land and property,” said Audace Kubwimana, ILC Africa Regional Coordinator. “It is therefore important that we work together to ensure that the security of land and property, as stipulated in Agenda 2063, is attained. That is one of the key ambitions of the 2020 Forum.”
The Program for the 2020 Land Forum will prioritize five areas, key to the delivery of Agenda 2063:
Reflection: How assessing the status of the implementation of the AU Declaration on Land Issues and Challenges in Africa (at the regional and national Levels) can further advance its progress.
Inclusion and Gender Equality: How meeting the targets set in the Agenda 2063 Implementation Plan (2013-2023) is instrumental to forging greater inclusion and gender equality in Africa, post COVID-19.
Social Peace: How land plays a key role in rebuilding Africa, fighting hunger and achieving the SDGs through family farming.
Ecology: How to restore landscapes and rangelands, and through them fight against land degradation and climate crisis in Africa.
Investment: How land can become a key driver of the African economy, benefiting the rural communities.
Speak with one voice, speak louder
We speak much louder when we all speak with one voice. Therefore ILC Africa took the initiative to build partnerships with the AU and IGAD in the organization of Africa Land Forum 2020. The ILC and IGAD are committed to ensuring the effective implementation of the AU’s Agenda 2063 with effective land governance. Through initiatives such as ILC’s National Engagement Strategies (NES) and Commitment Based Initiatives (CBI), and IGAD’s Land Governance Project, both institutions have been working to enforce people-centred land governance in Africa.
“The Land Forum affords us a great opportunity to reflect, reprioritize, reenergize and remobilize towards an absolute commitment to achieving the 2013-2023 set targets in the inclusive delivery of Agenda 2063,” said Shadrack Omondi, IGAD’s Land Tenure Expert. “IGAD is pleased to be part of this event as a way of strengthening multi-stakeholder engagement and improving monitoring of land reforms in the region.”
A fruitful Regional Assembly
The Land Forum will build momentum for ILC Africa’s Regional Assembly of members, slated for 18 September. The exclusive members-only gathering enables them to focus on the governance of the ILC Africa platform, its current impact and possible membership expansion. It is also the platform to discuss its progress in implementing 2019-21 work plan, despite the effect of COVID-19, and the strategy of the network in the coming decade.
