Nairobi, 6 September 2021— ILC Africa has announced that its annual Land Forum would take place virtually from October 26-28 under the theme “Achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Africa through partnerships for inclusive land governance”.
Today, the platform that counts 76 members in 26 countries said it would bring together the region’s foremost actors on land governance to explore opportunities, and mobilize forces, on building forward using national-level platforms or coalitions for inclusive land governance in advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
It said that more than 1500 farmers, business, government and civil society from over 70 countries, beyond the Africa region, will merge forces for a critical year ahead and discuss how to catalyze impact in Africa—eight years before the 2030 threshold.
“In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the need to work together to reset inclusive land governance priorities and the urgency to reform national systems in view of the SGDs have been growing stronger on the continent,” said Audace Kubwimana, regional coordinator of ILC Africa.
“Rebuilding trust and forging regional cooperation are crucial to fostering innovative and bold solutions to regain the drawback from COVID-19 on land tenure and drive a robust recovery, using land as factor of production.”
The unique meeting, which will be heralded by a hybrid press conference from Nairobi on October 19, will be an opportunity for land actors to outline their vision for partnership on burning issues of land governance on the continent, such as mitigating climate change and protecting the environment.
ILC Africa also said that this year’s Forum will be co-hosted by the African Union Commission’s Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Development, the African Land Policy Centre, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, as a pre-event of the 2021 Conference on Land Policy in Africa.
