Press Release
Kampala, Uganda - From 9–15 2024, the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development will host international and national land experts from 35 countries to showcase how successful government-civil society partnerships in the land governance sector can facilitate people-centred land governance.
The event is facilitated by the International Land Coalition in partnership with LandCollaborative; Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF); the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO)/Land-at-scale, National Land Coalition Uganda (NLC Uganda) and Land and Equity Movement in Uganda (LEMU)
In 2013, Uganda developed a National Land Policy, a progressive law that addressed issues including historical injustices, disposition and loss of ancestral lands, border disputes and ineffective dispute resolutions. The government of Uganda is presently reviewing the National Land Policy in a participatory and inclusive manner to ensure it continues to meet the needs of all stakeholders and to strengthen land tenure security.
“The Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development is thrilled to host such a high level of engagement and collaboration among diverse stakeholders in the land sector. This event demonstrates the power of partnership in achieving sustainable land governance’, says H.E Hon. Judith Nabakooba, Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development.
Participants, including civil society actors and representatives of Indigenous Peoples and women’s organisations, will present case studies showcasing successful partnerships with the government that have led to improved land governance outcomes. ‘By bringing together governments and civil society organisations, we are paving the way for more inclusive and effective land governance practices. Sharing these best practices is crucial for scaling up successful models globally,’ says Dr Doreen Kobusingye, Facilitator at the National Land Coalition-Uganda.
The National Land Coalition in Uganda (NLC Uganda) is a multi-stakeholder platform hosted by Land and Equity Movement in Uganda (LEMU) and comprises over 40 members spanning from international organisations, development partners, academia, cultural institutions, religious bodies, media and NGOs. NLC-UG works in close coordination with state and non-state actors at national and local levels to collectively advocate, formulate, review, and implement people-centred land policies in Uganda.
Through dialogue and the sharing of best practices, participants will develop innovative solutions to address complex land issues, aiming to improve land rights and livelihoods for millions across Africa.
